Pueblo Hotels & Motels
As one of the biggest cities in South Colorado, Pueblo is one of the major gateways for visitors to Colorado’s high country. This diverse city–which borders either side of the Arkansas River–offers a mix of gently rolling prairie landscape and alongside powerful mountain scenery.
Pueblo got its start back in 1842, and this is noticeable by the array of classic brick buildings through the historic downtown core. This primarily industrial city is known as the “home of the heroes” because it is the hometown of four Medal of Honor recipients—more than any other city in the United States.
ORIENTATION
Pueblo is located 45 mi (72 km) south of the larger city of Colorado Springs—which has an airport—and 120 mi (201 km) south of the state capital, Denver along Interstate 25. The New Mexico border is located 100 mi (160 km) south of Pueblo. Highway 50 runs east and west through Pueblo, connecting it with Kansas to the east and the Rockies to the west.
DOWNTOWN
Downtown Pueblo is a hotbed of activity, with many retails stores, restaurants and bars lining the streets. It’s here that Pueblo’s heritage is most evident, in its grand buildings and the historic Arkansas River Walk. For those who want to be in the middle of it all, a few hotel choices are offered, including the popular Cambria Suites, which is situated right in the centre of Pueblo’s heritage district. Cambria Suites offers many amenities, including a spa, fitness centre, indoor pool, coffee shop and onsite restaurant.
NORTH PUEBLO
Many travelers to Pueblo, however, opt to stay out of the downtown core and instead unpack in the north end of the city, particularly around the junction of Interstate 25 and Highway 50. Not only is this end of town convenient for road trippers, it also offers easy access to the Pueblo Mall, where most of the big retail chains offer great deals all year round. The Wingate by Wyndham Hotel in North Pueblo offers elegant rooms and features a complimentary breakfast, a hot tub and a pool.
SOUTH PUEBLO
Budget hunters may want to check out the opposite end of town. South Pueblo gives rise to a number of budget motels, most of which are located on Lake Avenue, close to Lake Minnequa. The Coronado Motel is arguably the most famous (or infamous) of these because it appeared in the movie National Lampoon’s Vacation. Other nearby chain hotels with reliable standards are found on Gateway Drive.
WEST PUEBLO
Situated outside of the city centre, Pueblo West is another great spot to relax. The Inn at Pueblo West offers views of the mountains and has the advantage of being located on the 18-hole Desert Hawk Golf Course so avid golfers will have no problem teeing up.
